PPG Program in joint collaboration with the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) organized a national seminar on “Sustainable Development Goals: Challenges of Implementation in Bangladesh” on 23rd of November 2016. The aim of the seminar was to stimulate the students of the Public Policy and Governance Program to understand the transition from MDGs to SDGs and its internalization to the national plan of Bangladesh and to highlight the implementation challenges.
Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya, Distinguished Fellow, CPD presented the keynote paper titled “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: Process and Key Issues”. In the presentation, Dr. Bhattacharya highlighted the key elements and features of the SDGs, its implementation challenges and institutional framework for SDGs implementation and Professor Mustafizur Rahman, Executive Director of CPD made an introductory speech.
Mr. Monirul Islam, Deputy Chief, General Economics Division (GED), Planning Commission, GoB; Mr. Asif Ibrahim, Former President, Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI); Professor M. Mahboob Rahman, PhD, Dean, School of Business & Economics, NSU; Professor Sk. Tawfique M. Haque, PhD, Director, Public Policy and Governance Program spoke as discussants.
The business session was moderated by Professor Salahuddin M. Aminuzzman, Adviser, Public Policy and Governance Program. Respected Chairman of the NSU Board of Trustees, Mr. Azim Uddin Ahmed spoke and shared his views with regard to quality education. At the end, a summary of the key learning points from the seminar was made by Professor Salahuddin M. Aminuzzman, Adviser, Public Policy and Governance Program.
It is revealed from the discussion that Bangladesh is one of the early starters and role model country to have internalized the SDGs which has been well reflected in the national planning document. The seminar was well attended by the senior Professors, Deans, Department Chairs and Graduate students of North South University. The seminar was presided over by the vice-chancellor of NSU, Professor Atiqul Islam, Ph.D.
